Bonswa La Sosyete,

I wish you all a Happy Fete Gede, a Happy Thanksgiving and a successful month of November.

Soon we will be moving into the month of December.  And as you may or may not be aware, spiritually December is considered a ‘hot’ month, it is the month of Petro!  It is also the time of year when Vodouisants and Sosyetes, alike, reheat and restrengthen their Gads and Protective Lwa.

There are many important dates in December.  And many Misterios and Lwa served within the month.    Throughout the month, we will be discussing a variety of topics . . . So please stay tuned, more on that later.

We serve the Petro to protect us spiritually and physically from evil and malicious attacks.    But, they are also the patrons of Powerful Vodou (Voodoo) magic, wanga (spells) and healing well known for their abilities to resolve large problems at lightning speeds.

During this time, many people will have gads Administered or Reheated.  This is very important, especially in these troubled times, as it serves to keep you well protected.

If you would like to read more about what a Gad is, you can read more about the Gad ceremonies here:

Azaka-Indian Lwa/ Taino and Arawak

Kouzen Zaka is a Lwa of the Djouba nation. Many individuals, mistakenly, think that he is a Rada Lwa. Rather, he is actually a member of the Djouba nation. This nation holds the secrets and mysteries of the Indians, the Tainos and Arawak Indians indigenous to the island.

Djouba is served right after Rada and right before the Nagos.

When we serve djouba, we serve with a tcha tcha rather than an Asson.   This nation is also served with boujis rather than candles.  And this is most appropriate considering the origin of this group of Lwa.

Kouzen Zaka, Zaka Mede, St. Isidore, Voodoo Spirit- Celebrated month of May

St. Isidore

Azaka, Patron Of Work

May is the month of Kouzen Zaka. Kouzen Zaka is the patron of work. He is associated with the image of St. Isidore. In Haitian Vodou, Kouzen is considered a peasent farmer. His abilitiy to work non stop is well known and for that he is highly regarded. . . . . .

Click here to read more about Kouzen Zaka

He is often approached to protect and safeguard one’s job, to obtain employment, and to protect farms and farm animals.

In Haiti, it is not rare for an individual to have a Houngan/Mambo come out onto their farm and bless it. Houngans and Mambos will also work with him to protect the individuals farm.
Kouzen is well known for his despise of theives. He is a great Lwa to safeguard the crops against any thievery.

Kouzen is a Lwa that loves to work! He works from sun up to sun down without a break. Kouzen also works for very little in return, though sooner or later Kouzen does like to be treated to a grand feast.

Kouzen has a wife, known to Vodouisants as Kouzin. She is a very successful market woman. She sells the crops which her husband harvests. Together they lead the nation of Djouba and also hold together a very large family of Spirits.

There are many other Zakas, most well known being : Ti Zaka, Azaka Mede, Minis Zaka, Azaka Krebs

If Kouzen is in your spiritual court, you should make an effort to serve him well this month.

This month in the blog we will be discussing the Mysteries of Kouzen, Stay Tuned to learn more about the Patron of Work

Danbala Wedo, Voodoo Lwa

Image of Moses holding the Tablets

Older Lineages use Moses to Represent Danbala in Rada

In Haitian Vodou, Danbala is the Holy of Holies. He is the tabernacle. This is the reason why Danbala is the most sacred of all the Lwa.   He is a divine Mystery that can be approached by anyone yet few are given access to his inner mysteries.

He comes in the form of the great serpent.  Those who have Danbala often dream of him and many have a deathly fear of snakes.   If you are Danbala’s child, you should pay special attention on his day and give him a special service.

He bestows wisdom and peace.  With these two things, anything can be achieved.  He is a very patient Lwa.  He is the father of all the Lwa.  In Vodou, March 17th is his feast day.  St. Patrick is the most commonly associated image with Danbala.

Older lineages, such as Gade Nou Leve, use Moses to represent Danbala Wedo.   His feast though is still celebrated on the 17th of March.  This is because the Catholic church does not consider Moses a Saint, thus he has no feast day.

Due to the above, it is said all Vodouisants must serve Danbala to a certain extent.  Greater homage and service is expected of initiates on his holy day.  But if you are a Vodouisant, who is not his child or initiated, you can do the following:

On Danbala’s day dress in white.  Put a white banner (piece of cloth) inside your home.  Make sure your home is spotless.  Then clean it out with Frankincense.  At 7 pm, light a small white candle.  Pray the Our Father, Hail Mary, The Creed three times.  Then talk with Danbala Wedo, the Great Serpent.

Receiving a Kanzo, Bautizo, Asiento, or any other Initiation, Things to Consider. . . .

Receiving a Kanzo, Initiation, Baptism, or other Ceremony of Initiation

I was recently speaking to a Mambo friend of mine and she was complaining to me about how one of her initiates had gone off claiming she was no

good, that he couldn’t mount spirits, that he wasn’t able to do work as good as she, and blah blah blah  . . . .   She was a bit upset because

she has done nothing but good by this person.  Spending ample time training him, working with him and trying to show him the way.

Now, I know this Mambo for quite a long time now.  I know that when she does give a ceremony it is an authentic initiation, it is correctly done

with all the proper sub ceremonies that are required.

This is an all too common issue.

Some individuals have the belief that once they get initiated they will be the instant beneficiary of all types of Supernatural Powers . . . oh

and without any work on their part!  Some of these individuals are truly naive, others have been misled by others to truly believe this, and

still yet others simply don’t listen (or don’t want to listen)

You won’t believe some of what I’ve heard over time . . .as to what these individuals believe they should be able to do and get (ie PHYSICALLY

Teleport to other locations, GO PHYSICALLY Invisible, PHYSICALLY FLY (Yes, folks, these are just a few.  And I mean, spread your arms and flap,

and go somewhere instead of an airplane!)

Some individuals also buy into the misconception that they will have a life dominated by riches, success in all areas of life, never have any

obstacle, trial or other issue, and that all of this will come without any work.  Again, some are also misled to believe this.

Yet, others believe that once they initiate they will have the automatic ability to mount spirits or that all people mount spirits or should be

able to mount Spirits.  And they should be able to call them to come in a seconds notice . . . .  oh, again without any work on their part.  From

what I have seen from expierence, in many/most cases, the reasons for this desire are ego driven and thus they are their own worst impediment.

I could go on and on. . . . .

I am here to clarify that this Simply Is Not The Case.  This post is not meant to make anyone feel bad or anything else of that nature.  I am

making this post out of love for my fellow human brothers and sisters, children of God, so that those who are misinformed and want to see the

Truth can.

Not everyone is pathed, or has the ability to, mount Spirits.  Even in those who do have this ability naturally, often the ability of calling

them (different Spirits) into there head is something that must be developed.   To be able to call them as needed and when needed.

Many people can mount Spirits but are not meant to work for others (regularly) with their Spirits mounted.   Many can mount Spirits on occasion

(usually without the real ability to control the where, when, what Spirit etc) if they work on developing this ability.

Even those without natural ability to do so, can often work at developing this.  But even with work on development, some will not be able to and

should abandon this in order to work further on developing their other abilities.

Initiation will not make you able to fly instead of taking a plane, go from place to place without phsyically traveling, become invisible while

sitting exactly in someone’s face during a conversation, etc . . . . . if that was the case, we, Houngans and Mambos would have been doing this

long ago!  We would never buy a plane ticket!

No Initiatior (Houngan, Mambo, etc) can give you the Spiritual Power or Light. THis is something that God and the Spirits give you.  They Can

Align you with your Spirits.

A little common sense often goes a long way.

Initiation doesn’t mean that you will never have another issue again in life.  In fact, as an Espiritista, we know and say if anything, the

opposite is true.  You will face obstacles because these are trials given to you by God and Spirits.  Through trials and tribulations, the

Spirits test our konesans, our loyalty, and our will and determination.  If we pass, we advance spiritually.  If we do not, we must face the

consequences of our actions.

If you look at the lives of any of the world’s greatests Spiritual Leaders, you will see that being a great Espiritista (or whomever you may be,

Houngan or Mambo, Santero, Etc) and having the ability to work with Spiritual Light and Power, also means that you will face many trials,

tribulations and tests.   Most good Houngans and Mambos never end up rich, but they do live comfortably but not rich.

With great power comes great responsibility . . . .

What the Spirits can do for you?

The Spirits can push things in the right direction for you.  They can affect a change for you (also if you allow them to do so), if that

situation or case can be changed.  You will not always get everything that you want.  And you aren’t suppossed to.  Not all things can be changed

or made different.   The Spirits can warn us, provide us with some answers that we may need, and help us make wise decisions.  However it is up

to the individual to take their advice or not.  The Spirits can protect us, help us make changes and change situation, and most of all GIVE US

OPPORTUNITIES.

What you choose to do with that opportunity is up to you.

You must be working in the physical realm in congruency with your desire.  Doing things here, which are steps towards your goal as well.

An initiation will align you with the Spirits.  Clear any obstacles that are hindering your spiritual development/communication, give you a

Title, give you tools to work with and information to work with.  Give you the traditional knowledge that is passed down.   But the most

important Konnesans that you will receive, comes directly from the Spirits.

But you must do the work.

I want you to take a moment, and imagine that when your initiator is initiating you, they are planting the seed within you.

It is up to you to water that seed, make sure that it gets sunlight, talk to it, etc so that it can grow into a strong healthy plant. It is up to

you to remove any weeds that may try to grow up around it, etc.    Just like your initiator did before you, and his/her initiator before them, etc

etc.

Remember, when you get initiated, you are commiting yourself to alot of work and responsibility.  Not simply rewards.

We can put the base of the soup together for you, but you must season it yourself so that it tastes good to you!  We cannot taste it for you too.

We cannot eat it for you, and then you get the strength from the food.

Remember it is God who gives.

Voodoo God- Papa Bondye

Remembering Bondye
Fellow Vodouisants,

I was sitting with my coffee at the altar this morning and after doing my prayers and libations, I meditated for a

while on the Mystery that is God.

As Vodouisants, it is all too easy and too common to get caught up in all the services, the Lwa, learning, etc, that

sometimes Vodouisants end up putting God behind.  I see all too frequently, prayers and reverences made to the Great

Master of the Universe done by rote and quickly, so as to move forward with the other things.

In Vodou, we have a phrase that can be found often in the songs, in prayers and other invocations.  This phrase is

“Apre Dye” or “After God”.  It means that we serve and pray to Bondye first.  We remember the Gran Met first.  For

God, whether God to you is a He/She/Energy, is the one with the true power.  Remember, it is God who gives that

power to the Lwa.  Thus, it is God who within the process allows what we desire to happen, happen!

Whenever I open my altar, I always pray the Traditional prayers and invocations, but before I start to call and

invoke the Lwa, I pray to God first.  And I pray from my true heart and soul.   God is there for everyone, and

anyone can reach out.

As you are all aware, Catholic prayers and liturgy (Litani Katolik) opens up the Priye which starts most fetes.

And when we give a Mani, Prilli or Fiesta, we start by prayers to God, sometimes hiring a prayer specialist (someone

who knows all the Catholic liturgy in the same manner as a Catholic Priest).  When we start the music for the

Misterios, we start with our songs for God, after which we follow for songs about work and the Misterios, so on and

so forth . . .

God is very very important.  You could build an altar to God if you so desired.  Pray and ask and you will receive

and you will know what to do.  Personally, though, an altar to God is not necessary.  The world is His playground.

God is everywhere.

No matter what situation you may be facing or expierencing, don’t worry God is there.  Reach out and God will reach back.  Remember God in all that you do, and remember it is He who gives the power to the Lwa Ginen.

Voodoo Spiritual Growth

Spiritual Growth-

spiritual Growth is something that we as spiritual people should be constantly seeking.  To become better, wiser,

and to develop continually as better and better individuals.

Unfortunately, all too often we (as people in general) get caught up in many other things, and many other things

often come in the way of spiritual growth and progress.  Daily life is often taxing, and we have many

responsibilities.

However, as spiritual people, we must strive to continually make the time and effort that needs to be made to make

this goal a reality.

Along with spiritual growth comes change.  Many often feel threatened or draw more within themselves when change

happens . . . and although this may make you feel comfortable, it doesn’t really resolve the situation.  Embracing

the change will lead you to a greater place and a wiser place.

In all this, I am not saying that spiritual growth is easy or fast.  Quite the opposite, it is alot of work.  Many

seeking the spiritual path are looking for short cuts.  Or a miracle pill that cures all the ills.  But this is not

so, this is not the way things work.

Spiritual growth, ability, and power doesn’t mean that you will never face a problem, trial or tribulation.  In

fact, as you know, growth often involves growing pains.  Some of the problems, trials and tribulations that you face

are huge blessings:  Opportunities for you to grow spiritually, physically, mentally and gain a huge amount of

wisdom, power and understanding.

If you take into account, most of the world’s most reknowned and followed Spiritual Leaders faced great opposition,

underwent huge trials, and had more than their fair share of tribulations.  They did not allow this things to make

them weaker, but used them to make themselves stronger, wiser and more spiritually connected beings.

This is for you, my fellow Vodouisant.  If you are expierencing some type of trial, tribulation, do not give up.

Trust in God and Ginen, for they are with you and because of that, and because you know that they will see you out

of any situation safely and marvelously.  Trust me, I know that.
